I look forward to the azaleas blooming each Spring. We have several in our yard, including three very large ones ... two red and a white ... along our drive. Another homeowner in the neighborhood once suggested they be cut down and replaced with lower growing varieties ... she didnt realize they are worth about $1,500 each ... besides, they are gorgeous; destroying them would be a sacrilege. I grew up among azaleas. Propagating azaleas was one of my fathers hobbies. At one time we had about a half acre planted in them ... I remember this well. Each year after Ringling Bros., Barnum & Bailey Circus left town a large dump truck would arrive at our house and drop a load of elephant dung in the drive ... it was my job to distribute it among the azaleas. They were not just any azaleas. They came from Mount Vernon ... George Washington's home ... where dad's close friend was horticulturalist ... the White House ... not sure he had permission for those; I think he just snipped them and slipped them into his pocket ... and several from large estates around the Baltimore-Washington area ... including several from Hillwood, Marjorie Merriweather Post's home ... to whom he sold a number of plants ...
