Six years in Atlanta, traveling in and out of here over 30 years ... and today for the first time I notice the small sign that says ... Flat Rock cemetery ... this way. It leads off on a little lane that winds along one of the runways for Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport ... and divides maintenance buildings from weed-choked plots ... it is not far to the little cemetery ... founded in 1877 ...once on a country lane well out from the city ... now hard on the runway ... . It's been a while since someone was buried here ... there are no fresh flowers, though it is mowed. It is a good place to spend part of Easter Sunday ... between the old and the new ... in a little oasis of granite and marble, stunted trees, bluebird and Mockingbird song ... interrupted by jets rocketing elsewhere ... and to remember.
