Mary Jane Welch, second from left ... or MJ, as we call her ... retired this winter. The Baptist Communicators Association honored her as a life member at their meeting in Atlanta last week, but she was unable to attend. I brought the award back with me and ... with a few colleagues ... presented it to her in Richmond. We then headed off to lunch ... when I first arrived in Richmond 15 years ago my oldest daughter and I researched the origins of our family in the United Sates at the Virginia State Library. We found a patent given our earliest ancestor for a piece of land across the James River from Jamestown dated 1641. We then went down and explored the area. When I talked about our experience a few days later, MJ asked if we had passed such-and-such a plantation on the way. When I said yes, she said that plantation was founded in 1642 and belonged to her earliest ancestor ... MJ and I worked together 15 years ... but families were neighbors much longer than that.
