... at the end of the day ... where the road plunges toward the town ... we stop for a photograph ... and are invited in by the wife of the man we soon learn is the head cacique of all the Xukuru-Kariri villages ... his daughter, Nara, talks with us while waiting for him to arrive ... "Who are you?" she asks ... "Who gave you permission to come on our land?" ... "What is your purpose here?" ... "What is your end goal?" ... I photograph her ... her eyes seem to bore right through us ... when Ceiestino ... the cacique ... arrives with his medicine man ... we learn while we may have permission from FUNAI ... Fundacao Nacional do Indio (National Indian Foundation) ... and the permission of the neighboring chief to be here ... we don't have his permission ... I raise a camera to photograph him ... "NO! NO!" he says, hands in the air ... and tells us he doesn't have time to talk tonight ... he is preparing for a sacred ceremony ... come back tomorrow at 7:00 a.m. ... we leave with little hope of welcome in the morning ...
