This is to be our last day … one more day to another tribe was planned … but they live at the end of 40 kilometers of rugged, 4-wheel drive track … with recent rains … it will be impassible … so today we visit the Kariri-Xocó … they are very accessible … on the Saõ Francisco River … or Velho Chico as it’s affectionately called …“The Old Chico River” … hard by Porto Real Do Collegio … theirs is an old village … near a city …so it has a LAN house for Internet access … we hedged our bet with them … knowing if we failed everywhere else … they would welcome us … and dance for us … but the surprise comes when we follow a track out of town … across field and into the Mata … and they dance in their Ouricuri … it is in a clearing next to a stream … while others go into the forest to change and paint … Ayrá … their spiritual leader … prepares tobacco for the dance …
