... standing in Lafayette Park ... across from The White House ... Safouh quietly asks support for a free Syria ... he has been in the United States for decades ... a citizen ... who loves this country ... and wants to see Syrians have the same freedoms that he exercises here ... his hometown is Hama ... site of much recent unrest ... also site of the 1982 Hama massacre ... when 25,000 protestors ... some say more ... as many as 50,000 ... were killed by Syrian troops loyal to Hafez al Assad ... president of Syria at the time ... and father of the current president ... there is a large field of crushed stone in Hama ... pieces larger than bits of gravel ... covering more than an acre ... what is left of a neighborhood ... now the burial place of the slain protestors ... to know this makes Safouh's quiet protest in front of The White House all the more poignant ... and powerful ...
