... we stop for a photograph ... and are invited into a nearby house by the wife of the man we soon learn is the head cacique of all the Xukuru-Kariri villages ... his daughter, Nara, talks with us while waiting for us to arrive ... "Who are you?" she asks ... "Who gave you permission to come on our land?" ... "What is your purpose?" ... "What is your end goal" ... I photograph her ... her eyes seem to bore right through us ... when Ceiestino ... the cacique ... arrives with his medicine man ... he tells us while we may have permission from FUNAI ... Fundacao Nacional do Indo (National Indian Fund) ... and the neighboring chief we don't have his permission to be here ... when I raise my camera he holds his hands up and says, "NO! NO! ... he is preparing for a sacred ceremony this evening ... doesn't have time to talk with us now ... tells us to come back tomorrow at 7:00 a.m. ... we leave without much of hope of a welcome.
